Career counseling is a process that helps individuals understand and explore their career options, set career goals, and develop a plan to achieve those goals. It can be helpful for people who are trying to choose a career, transition to a new career, or advance in their current field. Counselling sessions are generally carried out by a Counsellor, Psychologist, or a coach. Wondering how career counselling is done? Read on to find out!
At EduAnalist, we believe in a 5 step system of guiding our students:
1. Communication Stage
2. Inspection Stage
3. Decision Making Stage
4. Production Stage
5. Execution Stage

Stage 1 : Commencement
The first step in any counselling is understanding the crux of the problems. Here the counsellor will try to understand the student, collect basic information, ask about their aspirations, areas of improvement required, type of solutions the student is aiming for, amongst others. This stage is also where it is vital to build a strong bond between the student and the counsellor. Being honest and transparent about the underlying issues faced by the student should be spoken with 100% integrity.
It is also recommended that there be full truth and confidence with the counsellor. With the student being the top priority, it is also crucial that the student feel at ease and relaxed with the counsellor.
Stage 2 : Inspection
This is the exploration stage where the counsellor and student now have a healthy rapport. The student may be subject to exams, assessments or tests at this stage. Student’s personality, career interests, social behaviour, potentials, inclinations and more will be examined. This information will lay the ground for the next steps. Hence answering these questions in full honesty will bring the most accurate results. Students can learn what options and routes are available to them through one-on-one conversations with the counsellor.
Stage 3 : Decision Making
After the assessment, the student will be presented with their results and possible alternatives and options. Various paths are explored through this stage and a decision must be made to select one. The student is guided through this stage, and any obstacles preventing the student from selecting a career will be disregarded. A thorough counselling session will examine the best course of action.
Stage 4 : Production Stage
At this point, all options will have been considered, and choices will have been made. The moment to make a plan of action is right now. The student can follow a selected path with the help of this strategy. The student will obtain a backup plan and all possible resources will be made accessible. A sign of a good counsellor is someone who provides options, and doesn’t put all their eggs in one basket!
Stage 5 : Execution
The final stage, like in any plan, is executing it! This is the the time when the plan is put into action and made a reality. The student will be assigned objectives to complete and timelines to meet. This is possibly the most thrilling and nerve-wracking period for both the student and the counsellor! As per requirements, in the future too the two can work cohesively to overcome any hurdles in the path.
